CPR and AED

CPR certification for fitness professionals

Online CPR education can be convenient, but not every online-only course satisfies certification organizations or employers. Know what to verify before you enroll.

Online, blended, and in-person CPR

An online course may teach the knowledge portion of CPR and AED use. A blended course combines online lessons with a live skills session. In-person training generally includes instruction, practice, and an observed skills check in the same session.

Free CPR education may not be a certification.

Awareness courses and hands-only CPR videos can teach lifesaving information without issuing the completion card required for professional credentials.

Five questions to ask before enrolling

  1. Does my certification organization accept this provider?
  2. Does my employer require adult CPR, AED, first aid, or additional modules?
  3. Is a live or hands-on skills demonstration required?
  4. Will I receive a completion card, and how long is it valid?
  5. Is the skills session included in the advertised price?

Choose the course that meets the stricter rule

If your employer and certification organization have different requirements, choose the course that satisfies both. This may mean completing a blended or in-person option even when an online-only certificate is available.

Keep your renewal records together

Save the completion card, provider name, course date, expiration date, receipt, and any confirmation that your certification organization accepts the course. Set a reminder well before the card expires.
